Artist Biography

I began my vision quest in photography at a very early age. My father was a devoted amateur photographer who had won awards from salons judged by Ansel Adams as well as numerous club awards. At the age of eight, I was handed a Kodak Brownie. These first images began a life-long journey albeit obsession with trying to intrepret my life experiences through photography.

In the 70s, I worked as a freelance photographer for a local newspaper as well as being a director of photography for the students union at the local technical institute. From these beginnings, I pursued commercial and industrial photography, which in turn evolved into a successful career producing stock photography. Unfortunately I found that the volume required to satisfy the stock agencies eventually lead to burn-out. Most of what they wanted was soulless. I felt stifled so gave up on photography for anything but family and holiday photos for about 4 years.

In the late 90s, I found that the only way in which I could satisfy his thirst for expressive photography was through the traditional black-and-white medium. To achieve the rich tonality and creative control I desired, I went back to my roots and adopted the camera technology used by revered masters such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. Using large format view cameras force the photographer to slow down and think about what it is he wants to capture and convey. My negatives are four inches by five inches produced from hand loaded and custom developed film in a traditional wet darkroom. The resulting prints are captured using traditional silver-based papers and are selenium toned for museum-grade permanence.

I have both taught photography and have taken workshops from such celebrated photographers as Bruce Barnbaum and Don Kirby.

Articles I have either written or feature my photographs, have been featured in both Black and White Photography and B&W Magazines. Many private collectors enjoy the presence of Eric Rose fine art photographs in their homes and businesses.
